Alternative Policies and Practices of Migrant Citizenship in the Global South

This panel focuses on the analysis of practices as well as more formal policies of citizenship found and exercised by political communities and migrants in countries and spaces of the Global South, providing innovative examples of alternatives to more standard (Western, Euro-centric) concepts of access to citizenship for migrants. The practices we are interested in showcasing through the papers included in the panel cover not only formal inclusion policies by which some political communities in the Global South extend broad rights to groups of migrants, but also practices of migrant and national citizen political participation that, in solidarity with migrants, navigate, respond to, and challenge institutional inclusion structures. We invite articles that consider these phenomena for all types of migrant groups: immigrants, migrants, people in transit or without migratory status, and refugees.
