Description

“Uncertain Democracies” define the context of the World Congress theme. In no area has democratic backsliding been as universal as gender equality and gender justice. Women’s rights and LGBTIQA+ rights have seen a backlash whose force and scale were not anticipated. Progress we took for granted suddenly turns out to be precarious. This panel brings together research–theoretical and empirical; single and comparative case studies, quantitative and qualitative–that describes and explains both progress towards and regression from gender equality. The panel also welcomes studies that anticipate the short to long-term impact of this backsliding.

RC07 understands ‘Global South’ as a term that captures the experience of marginality and marginalisation in any geographical setting or social location. Accordingly, this panel platforms studies set in any part of the world, on any aspect of gender and sexuality politics, identity politics and gender relations in law and practice.
